Sailor Press
Started out of a desire to create books uncompromisingly and without too many external restrictions, and named after it’s founder and book designer Matilda Plöjel's youth career as a sailor. The micro-publisher Sailor Press is just as headstrong and inclined to go its own way as the name suggests. And perhaps it is these qualities that have given the publisher it’s obvious place as one of the most exciting and interesting in its genre. But an as important part of Matilda's work is the cross-border and close collaboration with the artists whose books she publishes. The goal is always to create a book with, not about, the person in question. And even if the book as an object is as important as its content, it is always important that it feels like the artist's book, not like a Matilda Plöjel book. Despite this, the personal commitment in each project is huge, and often ends in activities such as marbling three hundred covers herself or folding an entire edition of covers out of tissue paper by hand.
- I like to experiment with different techniques and materials and am very interested in the book as a physical object. Therefore, it becomes almost like important rituals to work more hands on with the books. It gives another meaning to the final result. Every choice in the process is important and even though I may sometimes have been frustrated that hands on work takes time, in the end it's always worth it.
